More flexible, allowing for changes in scope or direction throughout the project The waterfall method is a single-phase process that is often used in large projects that have many different stakeholders or where deadlines are very important. This makes it easier to see what has been done so far, and it allows stakeholders to provide feedback at any point in the process. In agile projects, each phase has its own set of tasks that need to be completed before moving on to the next one. The main difference between agile and waterfall project management is that agile projects are done in multiple phases, while the waterfall method is a single-phase process. The Difference Between Agile and Waterfall Project Management The basic idea behind the waterfall methodology is that each stage of the process should be completed before going on to the next one this ensures that each phase has been fully tested before moving on to the next phase or task. Many modern methodologies are based upon waterfall methodology, including agile software development methods like scrum or Kanban boards. It was first developed by Barry Boehm in 1968 as a way of managing complex projects that required multiple phases or tasks over time. The waterfall methodology is one of the most widely used approaches to project management today. But Agile and waterfall are two very different ways of approaching projects and managing teams. It’s a linear approach to project management, so it’s easy to see why it is often confused with Agile. The waterfall methodology is a project management approach that organizes tasks in a sequential manner, with each step dependent on the completion of the previous step. If everyone knows what their role is and how each piece fits into the larger picture, then they'll have a better chance of coming together at the end to complete their work successfully. The key to getting good results with this approach is making sure that everyone involved understands what they're supposed to be doing at every step along the way. This is because the entire project has already been broken down into smaller pieces. The idea is that if you do everything right up front (like planning), then things will go smoothly during the rest of the project and it's easier to see where things are going wrong when they do go wrong. Waterfall project management is a way of approaching projects where you start with the end goal in mind, take small steps toward achieving that goal, and evaluate how well you did as you go along. It’s one of the most popular approaches to project management because it reduces complexity by breaking down large projects into smaller phases and tasks, making them easier to manage. Waterfall methodology is a project management approach that has been around since the 1960s, and it’s still used today. The waterfall methodology isn't going anywhere and it shouldn't. It's been around so long, in fact, that you might be wondering: is waterfall methodology still relevant? Waterfall methodology is a type of project management that has been around since the 1960s. Single sign-on with Active Directory (AD).NxFilter cleverly solves this problem by supporting four authentication methods: This shortcoming is considered the main obstacle for the use of a DNS filter in corporate environments. Although DNS filtering is basically faster and even simpler than traditional web proxy filtering, DNS filtering was subject to certain limitations in the past (clearly, no user authentication because the DNS protocol does not have an authentication scheme, which was probably one reason for the low acceptance rate). They are also popular tools among private users – as are the millions of adblockers based on the same principle. WebProxy and other HTTP filters have enjoyed great popularity for many years – probably because they are comparatively simple to use. The design of the NxFilter user interface can also be customized. For example, companies can use NxFilter to generate their own cloud filter service for paid users. Basically, the developers grant their users extensive rights. Companies, public institutions, and private persons can use the tool. NxFilter is available under a freeware license. Figure 1 illustrates the differences between unfiltered and filtered DNS queries.įigure 1: Comparison of unfiltered (top) and filtered (bottom) DNS traffic. Ideally, the cache provides the responses, which results in a significant reduction of network traffic. If you operate a local DNS filter, the local DNS server serves the queries. Assuming a corporate network uses the Internet provider's DNS servers, the DNS queries have to be sent to these servers, and the network clients have to wait for a response. The reason for the performance gain is the local cache that NxFilter uses and manages for DNS lookups. The news gets better: Experience reports indicate that the use of NxFilter has a positive effect on the Internet connection of all the network clients. Because the DNS protocol is used, the data traffic does not have to pass through a special filter – thus eliminating latency problems. In essence, NxFilter is a forwarding DNS server with a filter function. NxFilter is a freeware DNS filter that can compete with commercial products in terms of functionality and performance. This limitation can be solved with the help of a DNS filter, which can monitor all the traffic, regardless of the protocol used to send or receive data. However, latency is not the only problem: Proxy servers primarily specialize in filtering HTTP connections. These latency problems grow with the number of users. The use of such filters, often employing the Squid proxy server and similar tools, leads in practice to serious latency problems on the network because the proxy server analyzes and filters the web traffic and thus becomes a bottleneck. Web filters that are based on the HTTP proxy server principle are part of the standard toolkit for protecting corporate networks. Tomlin tells us nothing about Ferris, and while more information may be forthcoming, he comes across here as a homicidal caricature–murdering his way through time as Shawn chases him for revenge. Shit got bad.” Tomlin doesn’t even make clear that it’s time-travel-by-murder, leaving that up to the reader to figure out on their own.Ĭharacter development in A Vicious Circle #1 is likewise limited. Shawn makes a vague reference to how he was sent from the future to destroy “a machine of death and destruction” and was confronted by Ferris who was sent from another future to turn the device on. Tomlin offers no real explanation for the time travel shenanigans going on here. Unfortunately, consideration is about all we get. Shawn and Ferris are tethered (via barely explained means) such that any time one of them kills somebody, both of them get yanked to another point in time.Ī Vicious Circle #1 is built on a fascinating concept of time travel and it’s intriguing to consider how that can affect a deadly rivalry. The rest of the issue is a non-stop grudge match hop through time. It’s a few pages later when we get the closest to a direct explanation for what’s going to happen in the rest of the issue: when Tommy dies, Shawn is going to be pulled out of this time and place. Instead, Shawn finds his son and wife injured and Ferris gone. A few pages later Shawn returns from a work errand, expecting to pick up Tommy to go fishing. Ferris asks if Shawn ever worries about what might happen if Shawn killed him. And that’s when we get our first look at Ferris, chained to the wall. Shawn heads into the basement to retrieve the poles. And in Tomlin and Bermejo’s time travel story, it’s really not the strangest thing at work.Ī Vicious Circle #1 starts with an ordinary weekend morning at the Thacker’s. It sounds bizarre, but that is how A Vicious Circle #1 opens. And the only way he gets to stay with them is if he keeps a man named Ferris chained in his basement, unable to kill.
